I've been to forty-one countries and the inside of most of their airports. I have seen the underside of a plane in Reykjavik, the wrong carousel in Lisbon, and a man in Naples sit on me for eleven minutes while he argued with someone on the phone. I did not enjoy any of it.
And then you get there. Somebody opens me up on a bed by a window, takes everything out, and I get to stand in a corner doing nothing for nine days. That's the part. That's why I keep getting back in the car.
I've been on a lot of trips with a lot of groups, which means I've been in the room for every version of the argument. The one about the boat. The one about who had the lobster. The one on the last morning where somebody does the maths out loud and gets it wrong. I'm not guessing about any of this. I was there, usually on the floor.
